BRIEF HISTORY
LAO PEOPLE’S ARMY
The Lao People’s Army was established on 20 January 1949 from the ethnic groups through out the country. The Lao people and the army had carried out a resistant war against invading of French Colonialists from 1945 to 1954, after that, they carried on facing a resistant war against the aggression of the American Imperialists from 1954 to 1975.
Over 58 years, under the able and brilliant leadership of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party, the Lao People’s Army together with the entire Lao ethnic groups in whole country have struggled and defeated the enemies of the nations, liberated the people from the slavery, regained the power, independence and freedom to the people, established the new regime, and at last officially proclaimed the Lao People’s Democratic Republic on 2nd December 1975.
The Lao People’s Army is honored by the State, Government and the ethnic people as the Hero Army, and it has been awarded Golden Medals, the most honorable decoration of the country as well as the other noble medals and decorations.
Under the new regime, the Lao People’s Army has actively contributed to the implementation of the Party’s guidelines and policy, particularly the two main tasks of the government namely the National Defense and the National Construction, together with the socio-economy development and gradual establishment the strong armed forces.
On 23 July 1997, the Lao People’s Democratic Republic has admitted permanent member of the Association of Southeast Asia Nations (ASEAN). Meanwhile, the Lao People’s Army has continued to implement its Party’s foreign policy of peace, friendship and cooperation with all nations and armies in the region and in the world on the basis of mutual respect sovereignty and interests in order to maintain the regional peace, stability and development.
Moreover, the Lao People’s Army has actively participated in the frame works of ASEAN namely the different level meetings, seminars, trainings and so on. In the field of ASEAN Armies Rifle Meet (AARM) and the ASEAN Chiefs of Army Multilateral Meeting (ACAMM), the Lao People’s Army took part in the 9th AARM 1999 for the first time, which hosted by the Royal Brunei Land Force. Over eight participations of AARM, even though we are not awarded any trophies, but we remain satisfying and are great honor for our opportunity to take part in ASEAN Army forces’ activity. Besides the friendly competition and experienced exchanges, we understand that this activity is also the significant aspect for promotion of trust and confidence building measures between the ASEAN armed forces. The Lao People’s Army is ready for taking part and cooperation with ASEAN Army Forces in order to maintain peace, stability, security and cooperative development in the region.
