Brief History
Myanmar Armed Forces
Since its inception, the Myanmar Armed Forces (of) Tatmadaw, has dedicated
itself to serve the interest of the people. Myanmar had been an
independent and sovereign state for thousand of years. Throughout our
history, from Pagan Dynasty to Kanbuang Dynasty, Myanmar had been a
unified, strong and powerful nation whose influence extended to the whole of
South East Asia.
In the early 19th century due to the colonization policy of the British,
Myanmar had to encounter three successive wars the British in 1824, 1852 and
1885, respectively.
In 1930’s a political association known as “Dobama Asiaone” was formed and
more progressive from of anti-imperialist movement was initiated.
On 1st Aug 1943, Myanmar was proclaimed an independent country but the then
Japanese military authorities in Myanmar resorted to high-handed measures and
the practice of the most ruthless fascism was laid bare by the occupying
Japanese military forces.
On 4th Jan 1948, Myanmar attained independence from the British.
Since the gaining of independence, Myanmar had to face with a nationwide
insurgency of the BCP, the kayins and other multicolored insurgents.
During the 1980’s economic recession throughout the world also caused much
difficulty for the Myanmar-Naing-Ngan’s self reliant economy which was mainly
dependant upon agricultural primary commodities. This and the
repercussions of events in the international scene brought about a lowering of
public confidence in the socialist system. In 1988, political upheaval
occurred by the instigation of leftist and rightist groups which led the nation
to near desintegation. Thus the state law and order restoration council
(or) Tatmadaw had perforce to take over the state powers and to undertake to
discharge of the three sacred responsibilities namely: to preserve the integrity
of state, to preserve the unity of the nationalities and to preserve the
sovereignty of the state.
Now, under the leadership of the state Peace and Development Council, Myanmar
Naing-Ngan is on the path to a modern and development nation where peace and
tranquility prevail.
