“GENERAL. ATIENZA DAY” in 51ST Engineer Brigade

imgGENERAL RIGOBERTO J. ATIENZA is known as a brilliant officer. He served in the military from 1936 to 1966. He is remembered for his outstanding performance in time of war as well as in times of peace. During the Second World War, General Vicente Lim, Commanding General of the 41st Infantry Division USAFE to which General Atienza belonged, said of him: “In this war, I know of no other officer as loyal as Atienza, nor one with so colorful a war record.” The American officer who served as Advisor to the 41st Division wrote thus of General Atienza: “This officer is one of the finest Filipino officers I came in contact with.”

General Atienza was cited for his exceptional and meritorious service during the war, for his “unusual intelligence, general knowledge of warfare, coolness under fire, indefatigable energy and high qualities of leadership.”

He was Division Engineer at the start of the war and at the fall of Bataan three months later, he was slated to assume the post of Regimental Commander. He walked with his comrades-in-arms in the infamous Death March and went on to eventually become the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. General Atienza’s achievements in the war as a young officer presaged his exemplary performance throughout his military career. He was regarded as one of the best-informed AFP officers on national and international military affairs.

He was an early proponent of the expanded role of the Philippine military in the country’s socio-economic development, providing the entire AFP this guiding principle: “We must be able by social action to participate in the various tasks of nation-building. . .make this land of ours a better place to live in for each and everyone.” Thus, every October 8 each year, “GENERAL ATIENZA DAY” is being celebrated at the 51st Engineer Brigade, a day to remember GENERAL RIGOBERTO J. ATIENZA for a Tribute To, and Call For, Giving One’s Best In Service.
