  Valor Awardees

 

1. MAJ GENERAL PAULINO SANTOS

“For exceptional conduct and conspicuous courage displayed at Bayang Cotta Lanao Del Sur on 26 July 1917.” Then a Philippine Constabulary Second Lieutenant, Paulino Santos led government troops in neutralizing bands of moro outlaws numbering about 500. Using scaling ladders, Lieutenant Santos and his men stormed the well-constructed and fortified cotta and killed 30 outlaws. Lieutenant Santos sustained a near-fatal gunshot wound at the back of his head.

2. MAJ FERDINAND E. MARCOS

“ For extraordinary gallantry and intrepidity in a suicidal action against overwhelming enemy forces at the junction of Salian and Abo-Abo rivers, Bataan on or about 22 January 1942.” Bent on defending the junctions of Salian Abo-Abo rivers , Then 3rd Lieutenant Marcos led a hastly organized company-sized blocking force from remnants of 4 units. The defensive action against 2,000 highly-trained and well-equipped men prevented the possible decimination of the withdrawing USAFFE Troops and delayed the inevitable Fall of Bataan.

3. CAPTAIN JESUS A . VILLAMOR

“ For conspicuous courage and extraordinary heroism during the period from 27 December 1942 to November 1943 by volunteering to lead the first allied intelligence bureau division to the Philippines. Containing his work as an intelligence officer even after his own unit was overwhelmed and destroyed. Captain Villamor was able to able to slip past the Japanese navy in 1942 and subsequently establish a chain of direct communication from the Philippines. With General McArthur in Australia. Captain Villamor performed various tasks including coordinating guerilla movement activities, developing an organization for subversive propaganda and resistance efforts against the Japanese and acting as a “Clearing House” for USAFFE information vital to the strategy for the liberation of the Philippines.

4. EGMEDIO CRUZ

“ For exceptional heroism while performing a secret mission from Washington D.C. U.S.A., to Australia and to the Philippines from May 1943 to 20 February 1944. Major Cruz was tasked with evaluating the behavior and attitude of Filipino leaders towards the Japanese conquerors, prompted by president Quezon’s need to determine their loyalty to the allied cause. Major Cruz secured a blueprint of the Japanese defenses along the San Bernardino Strait and provided the information needed to successfully conclude his mission.

6. MAJOR GENERAL MARIANO N CASTANIEDA SR.

“ For conspicuous gallantry even at the risk of his life to protect President Manuel A Roxas on the eve of the party Plebiscite on 13 March 1947 at Plaza Miranda Quiapo Manila. Extraordinary courage and presence of mind of then chief of constabulary General Castaneda saved the lives of President Roxas. The first family and other high ranking officials. During that fateful eve in March 1947. General Castaneda took charge when a grenade landed under the seats on the platforl. While ordering people to lie down he kicked the grenade off to the steps of the platform where it exploded.

Staff Sergeant Miguel Postolero As the member of the Special Infiltration Team of the 15th Batallion Combat team, then Corporal Postolero risked his life during the attack on the hideout of Hukbalahap Chief Neri Ty in Capiz. The operation resulted in the killing of 22 huks including Ty and the capture of 8 colors contributing to the gains against the Huk movement.

7. TECHNICAL SERGEANT FRANCISSO CAMACHO

“For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in an encounter with the notorious Hukbalahap leader Eddie Villanpando, commander Guevarra and one bodyguard sometime in Dec 1995.” Tasked with the mission of liquidating huk leader Eddie Villapndo, Technical Sergeant Camacho along with Corporal Weene Martillana were able to penetrate the huk organization, gaining their confidence. Finding the right opportunity soon after, Villapando was successfully neutralized but Technical Sergeant Camacho was killed on the spot from retaliatory shots fired by the huks.

8. CORPORAL WEENA MARTILLANA

“For outanguishing himself conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity, at the risk of his life and beyond the call of duty, for killing Huk leader Eddie Villapando at Barrio Tabon, Calawan, Laguna on 20 December 1995. Conducting intelligence work for 3 months in a liquidation mission against Huk leader Eddie Villapando, Corporal Martillano of the 1st Scout Ranger Regiment worked with Technical Sergeant Francisco Camacho to penetrate Huk territory. They succeeded in killing Villapando and two others.

9. CAPTAIN CONRADO D. YAP

“ For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty against superior enemy forces at Yultong, North Korea, on 222-23 April 1951. Serving as part of the PEFTOK mission in North Korea, Captain Yap led his unit in reinforcing the beleaguered squad of 1st Lt. Jose M. Artiaga jr. who had been hit in the defensive action in the in the battle of Yultong. Cap Yap personally retrieved the body of Lt. Artiaga and three enlisted men in a counter attack intended to regain the hill portion and rescue the unit. He also assaulted an enemy fire emplacement 800 yards away inspite of enemy fire and was killed in the process.

10. SERGEANT BIENVENIDO FAJEMOLIN

“ For outstanding courage, conspicuousgallantry and intrepidity in the face of a strong rebel attack in the afternoon of 18 October 1977 at Kawit-Kawit, Sibuco Zamboanga del Norte. In the face of surprise attack on the headquarters of Charlie Company and the absence of officers out on official business, then platoon sergeant Fajermolin took control of the company command post and proceeded to rally the troops in defending the camp decisive action turned the situation around as he supervised a maneuver that confused the enemy on the actual strength of the defending troops which led to enemy withdrawal.

11. CAPTAIN HILARIO A. ESTRELLA

“For gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life, above and beyond the call of duty, as detachment commander, 33rd Infantry Battalion, 1st Infantry (Tabak) Division, Philippine Army, in repulsing more or less 200 heavily armed subversive terrorists that launched a surprise attack on the detachment in Bayog, Zamboanga del Sur on the dawn of 10 December 1984.

12. SERGEANT FRANCISCO GRANFIL

“For outstanding courage, conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life, above and beyond the call of duty, during an encounter with about 100 armed communist terrorists at upper Limot, Tarragona, Davao Oriental on 12 February 1988. A fearless charged towards the pinned elements of the government troops led by Sergeant Granfil caught the enemy by surprise and caused several casualties on the enemy side. In the ensuing action, Sergeant Granfil returned fire against numerically superior enemy forces using a damaged M60 he himself had repaired. His bravery in the face of reinforcement rebel units, resulted in enemy withdrawal, 37 terrorists killed and several others wounded.

13. CAPTAIN ARTURO B ORTIZ

" For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity, at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty, during fierce firefight with about 200 numerically superior rebel at Sitio Wanepolon, Pandaran Murcia, Negros Occidental on 6 April 1990. While serving as commander of five joint Leons of the 606th Special Forces Company and CAFGU ELEMENTS. Captain Ortis acted on information on the presence of a terrorist camp in Murcia and initiated the planned rail. Leading his troops through tough terrain, they successfully infiltrated the camp and engaged the enemy in a 2-hour gun battle that resulted in the death of 85 terrorists, the capture of 8 more and the recovery of assorted firearms and ammunitions.

14. LIEUTENANT BARTOLOME VICENTE O. BACARRO

“For conspicuous courage, gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty during a ten-hour encounter with about 150 fully armed communist terrorists who attacked the town of Maconacon, Isabela on 26 February 1991 while serving as commanding officer, 6th CAFGU Active Auxiliary Company, 21st IB, 5th ID, Philippine Army. Wounded and lacking air or artillery support against an overwhelming number of armed insurgents. Disregarding the wound on his left thigh, he entered a compound where member of a CAFGU were pinned down by the enemy, commandeered a dump truck and ranned the fence that provided an entry point for his men. His gallantry resulted in the neutralization of the terrorists and the recovery of various firearm and ammunitions.

15. Corporal Romualdo C Rubi

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of the life above and beyond the call of duty, during an encounter with heavily armed and numerically superior communists terrorists in the vicinity of Barangay Hayong, Gabon, Claver, Surigao del Norte, on 18 march 1991. Returning from a visit to his family, Corporal Rubi was awaiting his pump boat ride to his unit when about 100 terrorists attacked a nearby PC detachment. Responding to the situation, he fired his M16 rifle at the enemy and managed to hit three of them, at the same time drawing enemy fire upon himself. With more bullets armed at him, the gallantry returned fire, hitting their leader commander Lina Fatally.

16. Staff Sergeant Roy L Cuenca

“For outstanding, steadfast and conspicuous gallantry in action, greatly risking his life in an extremely dangerous situation above and beyond the call of duty, while serving as Cadre Commander of CAFGU Auxiliary Salvacion Patrol Base, 29th Infantry Battalion, 4th Infantry Division, during a fierce firefight against 100 armed communists terrorists at Barangay Salvacion, Tandag, Surigao del Sur on the dawn of 30 October 1991.” Wounded during a surprise attack led by Commander Pawing, Staff Sergeant Cuenca rallied his men and led them in repulsing the enemy from overrunning their detachment. They held their ground against superior enemy numbers for three hours, and eventually caused the enemy to withdraw, leaving behind 9 enemy casualties and various firearms.

17. 2ND LIEUTENANT JOSE E BANDONG JR.

For acts of conspicuous courage, gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty while serving as a Platoon Leader of Delta Company, 24th Infantry Battalion, 4th Infantry Division, Philippine Army, during the unit’s encounter with about 80 heavily armed NPA terrorists belonging to the Chadli Nolintas Commnad Regional Unit Guerilla (CMC-RYG) on the boundary of Sagada and Bondoc Mountain Province.” Engaged in successive surprise encounter with the numerically superior NPA terrorists, Lieutenant Bandong led his platoon in repulsing enemy attacks and proirding reinforcement to rescue another engaged unit. In the course of the action, Lieutenant Bandong was wounded but continued to fire upon the enemy. His final act of gallantry was to order the withdraw of his men to safety, leaving him and the dead behind as he delayed enemy advance until his last bullet.

18. CAPTAIN CIRILITO E SOBEJANA

“For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty during an encounter with about 150 Abu Sayyaf kidnap gang members at Sitio Caro, Barangay Lower Kapayawan, Isabela, Basilan Province on 13 January 1995, while serving as Company Commander of the 1st Scout Ranger Company.” Heading a platoon to reconnoiter an enemy siting, Captain Sobejana provided continuing direction and leadership under enemy attack despite sustaining several bullets wounds. By his courage, his platoon held their ground for almost four hours with reinforcements arrived to secure the area. Total enemy casualties was placed at 30 with several wounded.
