9ID Commander Bids Farewell
FORT BONIFACIO, Taguig City – The 9th Infantry Division based in the Bicol region bids farewell to its Commanding Officer Major General Josue S Gaverza, 56, as he retires last July 5, 2012.
Gaverza, a member of the Philippine Military Academy Class of 1978, assumed position on March 26, 2011. Prior to this, he was the commander of the 303rd Infantry Brigade in Visayas.
During his watch, the Army in Bicol has expanded its efforts in winning the peace by working closely with various stakeholders in delivering public services for the people.
As an example, the soldiers helped in establishing an Eco-Park in Donsol, Sorsogon where they joined the local government and civil society organizations in the reforestation project of the Mangrove area in the locality.
They have also constructed school buildings in various areas including the one in Castilla Sorsogon which was funded by NGOs.
Under his sterling leadership, the unit has made significant gains in reducing the enemy influence in areas previously claimed as NPA villages.
Supported by the civilians, the military was able to capture some of the rebels’ key leaders and the rest of others.
He also made Camp Elias Angeles, the home of the 9ID, a tourist destination by improving the extinct facilities including the establishment of relic points inside the camp.
He also served as the Battalion Commander of the 31st Infantry Battalion where he became to be known as one of the best commanders the battalion ever had.
During that time, they successfully defeated the communist rebel New People’s Army (NPA) when his troops seized the bandits’ camp. His Battalion was conferred the Commander 2ID Streamer Award.
His men also lauded him for putting the soldiers’ welfare on top of his priorities while upholding strict military discipline.
Meanwhile, Baladad, the 9ID Deputy Commander will assume as Acting Division Commander while waiting for the designation of the next commander.
