ARMY POOL ATTRACTS PATRONS UNDER THE SUMMER HEAT
FORT ANDRES BONIFACIO, Taguig City – Patrons and visitors of the Philippine Army Wellness Center plunge in its Olympic-sized pool under the scorching summer heat.
Sergeant Elwin Juan, the Non-Commissioned Officer in-charge of the Army pool said that influx of visitors is a common view at the Army pool every summer.
The 50-meter pool is open to Army soldiers, civilians and other branch of service personnel i.e. Philippine Navy, Philippine Air Force and the Philippine National Police.
Army soldiers and civilian employees can enjoy the inviting blue waters for free from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on regular days.
The pool is open for public at Php 100 for day-time swimming and Php 125 for night swimming at 6-10 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday.
However, during the Army-sponsored summer clinic to personnel dependents, the pool is only open from 1-6 p.m. on weekdays. On weekends though, everyone can enjoy the regular hour from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Cottages are also available for renting at Php 75 for umbrella cottages, Php 1, 200 for the big pavilion, and Php 350 for small pavilion. These rates are good for the entire stay at the pool.
Just like other pools, the Army pool requires proper swimming attire. For males, swimming trunks and cycling shorts are permitted while females can wear one or two-piece swimsuit.
As the facility practices safety rules, lifeguards are also stationed near the pool in cases of emergency. Users must first read the swimming pool rules and regulations to avoid accidents and uncalled for incidents.
Home to world champions
The Army pool is also one of the training venues of the world champion Philippine Dragon Boat Team who bagged five golds and two silvers in the world championship held in Tampa Florida last year.
Seven of the world renowned Pinoy Dragon Boat Warriors are soldiers of the Philippine Army.
Juan who is also a member of the dragon boat team said that the pool also caters to other capacity-building activities like Navy survival trainings and swimming lessons.
“PA units can also request for disaster response trainings which are conducted by our Army coaches,” Juan added.
Other sport activities like underwater hockey are also done at the Army pool. It even caters to birthday parties and similar occasions which can be conducted at the picnic area.
Other special command activities are also done inside the facility for free.
