Official Philippine Army Press Release

Date Released: 31 July  2008

Troops recover landmine in Sultan Kudarat

A landmine was retrieved by elements of the 57th Infantry Battalion and one squad of Civilian Active Auxiliary (CAA) of the 38th Infantry Battalion at Sitio Lampera, Brgy. Natividad, Columbia, Sultan Kudarat at 9:30 a.m. on July 29.

The landmine was placed inside a steel box with fuse blasting located beside a bridge in the said barangay. The item was brought to the Command post of the said company for proper disposition.

The continuous use of landmines had inflicted casualties on innocent civilians including peace keeping soldiers. This is a very inhumane act which violates the international treaty on the banning of the use of such weapons that indiscriminately kill and maim not only combatants but also innocent civilians.

Meanwhile, three sections of the 52nd Division Reconnaissance Company, while scouring Brgy. Aridawen, Sta. Teresita, Cagayan, discovered an abandoned New People's Army encampment at 2 p.m. on July 29. The said camp has an estimated land area of three hectares, composed of 15 bunkers, three guard posts, one classroom, one kitchen and one latrine believed to have been abandoned for almost six months now.

As of press time, the troops continue scouring the area and its adjacent barangays for possible enemy presence. #
