An NPA rebel renounces armed struggle
The peace and development efforts of the government continues to gain
ground as New People's Army rebels chose to renounce their armed
struggle and embrace a life of peace.
With the intentions of availing the additional remuneration from the
Social Integration Program of the government, Rodolfo dela Cruz, a local
terrorist group member who recently surrendered to the elements of the
80th Infantry Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division divulged the location of
his firearm, an M16 rifle, hidden in a remote sitio in Sablayan,
Occidental Mindoro.
Dela Cruz is presently undergoing the initial process of integration
into the mainstream society through the Social Integration Program of
the government.
The Social integration Program offers livelihood for those rebels who
want to renounce their armed struggle. It presents an opportunity for
rebels to return to their families and communities and avail themselves
of a comprehensive package which include initial financial assistance
amounting to P20,000; livelihood training to go with a provision for
initial capital; and remuneration for surrendered firearms - P50,000 for
an M16 or M14 rifle surrendered.
Meanwhile, elements of the 31st Infantry Battalion successfully
retrieved various high-powered firearms and an Improvised Explosive
Device in an encounter with New People's Army rebels at Brgy. Tible,
Lupi, Camarines Sur yesterday, September 6.
A 10-minute firefight with the local terrorist group operating in the
said area led to the recovery of two M16 rifles, one M14 rifle, and an
Improvised Explosive Device. There were no casualties on the government
side, while undetermined on the enemy side.
