Press Release #03-046

Date Released: 04 Feb 2009

Army troops defuse 5 landmines in Surigao

Five landmines were defused by the members of the Army's 8th Surigao del Sur Cafgu Active Auxiliary (CAA) Company led by CAA Perciniple B. Mayordomo at 4:30 p.m. on February 1 at Sitio Greenfield, Brgy. Sta. Juana, Tagbina, Surigao del Sur.

Reports reaching the Army Chief Lt. Gen. Victor S. Ibrado disclosed that the troops were clearing the area when they found the landmines in a container, allegedly owned by Front Committee 14, North Eastern Mindanao Regional Committeee (NEMRC).

A squad of Alpha Company of 36IB under 2Lt. Jumagdao rushed to scene and recovered the landmines.

The NPA terrorists have always been violating the International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and the Geneva Convention by using landmines or improvised explosive devices, with an aim to destroy private and even public properties. Yet, they are always the first to invoke IHL and the Geneva Convention when trying to point out infractions of the Armed Forces.

Likewise, the Philippine Army is reminding the public to be extra vigilant, cautious, and to report suspicious-looking items to the authorities, as these terror groups do not choose their victims, so do the IEDs whether men in uniform or defenseless civilians.

Meanwhile in Cotabato, an abandoned NPA camp was found by the operating troops of the Army's 57th Infantry Battalion led by 1Lt. Abellanosa and 2Lt. Domingo at 11:27 a.m. on February 3 at Sitio Dulay, Brgy. Bacong, Tulunan.

The camp has an estimated land area of 500 square meters and can accommodate 80 persons. Troops recovered six improvised beddings and a list of their duty details.

Troops believed that the NPA terrorists under Emmanuel Fernandez alias Bobo, commanding officer of Regional Operation Command (ROC), Far South Mindanao Region (FSMR) and Felix Amodia alias Jing, commanding officer of Guerilla Front 72, FSMR, who were encountered by a platoon of the Army’s 57th IB under 2Lt. Domingo last February 2, 2009. #
