5 NPA terrorists surrender, firearms recovered in Davao

CAMP Panacan, Davao City - Five New People's Army terrorists belonging to Guerilla Front (GF) 53, Southern Mindanao Regional Committee (SMRC) voluntarily surrendered with five high-powered firearms to Major Roylan M Orquia, commander of 3rd Special Forces Battalion at 8 a.m. on January 29 in Brgy San Isidro, Tagum City.

They were identified as Danilo B Bayawan alias Boy Payat; Dodong T Andip alias Jun-Jun; Sandique P Dapan alias Jok-Jok; Julie M Eliseo and Salonga D Ligud. The surrenderors turned over two caliber 30 Garand rifles, a caliber 9MM Thomson pistol, and two caliber 30 Springfield rifle. They are temporarily under the custody of the 3rd SFBn for custodial debriefing.

Reports reaching the Army Chief Lt. Gen. Victor S. Ibrado disclosed the reasons why the five surrendered were because of hardships and continuous purging of their comrades. They will be provided with benefits under the Social Integration Program (SIP) of the Government. In this program, they will be given cash valuation for the firearms they surrendered and income-generating livelihood programs in support of their new lives together with their families.

Major General Jogy Leo L Fojas, commander of the Army's 10th Infantry Division said, "We welcome these former NPA rebels as they have made the right choice of leaving the underground movement that brought misery in their lives and family. The actions of these former NPAs will serve as a wake-up call for those who are still in the mountains and being deceived by the CPP-NPA-NDF. They do not have ideology anymore. They only exist because of banditry and terrorism." #
