A 17-year old New People's Army rebel surrendered to the elements of the
55th Infantry Battalion bringing along his M16 rifle and various
ammunition.
Reports reaching the Philippine Army headquarters disclosed that said
minor belongs to the local terrorist group operating in Misamis
Occidental.
Upon debriefing, it was learned that said minor had participated in the
series of harassments perpetrated by NPA rebels in CAFGU detachments
located in the municipality of Sapang Dalaga, Misamis Occidental. He
further disclosed about leaving behind two more high-powered firearms in
the outskirts of Brgy San Isidro, Calamba, Misamis Occidental.
Consequently, the 55th IB conducted a follow-up operation to recover
said firearms. While proceeding to the area, the Army troopers
encountered more or less ten local terrorists; firefight lasted for
about 20 minutes after which the enemies withdrew westward. The troops
then recovered two M16 rifles not far from the encounter site.
The young rebel is now recommended for inclusion in the government's
Social Integration Program. Like the many who finally renounced their
armed struggle, it is the realization that he is fighting for a lost
cause that made this young rebel return to government fold and embrace a
life of peace.
Meanwhile, the Philippine Army condemns the NPA's continuous recruitment
of minors to join in the armed movement. This added to the long list of
violations perpetrated by the CPP/NPA/NDF.
As agents of peace, the Philippine Army shall continue to conduct
peaceful and development endeavors all over the country with the end in
view of providing an environment of peace and stability conclusive to
national development. # |
