Army braces for
supertyphoon
While the Philippine Army is busy with its ongoing relief operations in
Rizal and other areas affected by "Ondoy," it braces itself for yet
another weather disturbance that is to affect the country in the next 24
hours.
Yesterday, October 1, Army Chief Lt. Gen. Delfin N. Bangit issued a
directive to his subordinate commanders, particularly that of the 2nd,
7th, and 5th Infantry Divisions, to prepare for the coming supertyphoon
which is to affect Northern and Central Luzon. This includes the
identification of flood-prone areas, followed by planning of contingency
measures to easily respond to the needs of the residents. In line with
the directive of the Army Chief, disaster response teams and engineering
battalions of the Philippine Army are to be deployed to various areas
for immediate response to any untoward incident. Army reservists are
also to be alerted for mobilization to augment the regular troops of
rescue and relief operations. Lt. Gen. Bangit also urged the unit
commanders to maximize coordination with the local officials in their
respective areas and the Regional Disaster Coordinating Councils.
The Philippine Army promises to remain solid in its stance in protecting
the Filipinos from any sort of threat-be it caused by local terrorists
or that of Mother Nature.# |
