Press Release No. 03-069

Date Released: 1 February 2010

3 NPAs killed in COMVAL encounter

Three New People's Army rebels were killed while a notorious rebel leader was wounded and captured in an encounter with the Philippine Army troops in Compostela Valley over the weekend.

Reports reaching the Philippine Army headquarters from field unit disclosed that elements of the 8th Special Forces Company under 2Lt Marcelino de Jesus, while conducting combat operations, encountered 20 local terrorist group members operating in the Southern Mindanao Region at Brgy LS Sarmiento, Laak, Compostela Valley.

The firefight which lasted for about 45 minutes resulted to three enemies killed and the wounding and capture of another. The captured rebel is identified as communist terrorist leader Zaldy Caņete alias Jinggoy who is a notorious terrorist leader responsible for many crimes against the people, the state, and the public order. He led the disarming of Napungas Detachment in Asuncion, Davao del Norte and Casoon Detachment in Compostela Valley; and the abduction of 1Lt Camayo and Cpl Alegre among others.

Jinggoy, who was accorded with the necessary medical attention, is currently recuperating at the Davao Medical Center.

The encounter also resulted to the recovery of two M16 rifles, one M14 rifle, and an M653 rifle. There were no reported casualties on the government side.

The Philippine Army condoles with the families of the killed rebels and assures the public that it shall remain consistent with its policy of strict observance to the principles of human rights as it vows to make certain that alias Jinggoy is being treated and taken care of.

This latest gain in the fight against the NPA bandits can be attributed to the unrelenting efforts of the Philippine Army, in partnership with all the stakeholders, in their continuing pursuit for peace and development. With the intensified tactical offensives, coupled with peace and development initiatives throughout the country, the Philippine Army is confident that it can reduce insurgency to insignificance by mid 2010. #
