Official Philippine Army Press Release

Press Release No. 03-082

Date Released: 03 March 2010

Three of Morong 43 refute human rights violation

Yesterday, March 2, three of the 43 arrested New People's Army (NPA) rebels who were captured in Morong, Rizal last February 6, 2010 submitted to the fiscal in Tanay, Rizal an affidavit stating that they were actually members of the rebel group and that they were not tortured by their custodians in Camp Capinpin in Tanay Rizal.

Admitting that they are really NPA members, Valentino Paulino, Cherylyn Tawagon, and Eleonor Carandang, signed a statement stating that they were not tortured by the detention guards on their cells, contrary to the spreading issue that the captured 43 NPA members are being tortured by the guards in the camp. In said affidavit, they expressed their requests of remaining inside the camp and for them to have new lawyers to represent them.

It was also reported that the three NPA members, in the presence of representatives from the Commission on Human Rights, did not sign the complaint prepared by Atty. Romeo Capulong against alleged human rights violations that took place within the camp while they were detained.

One with the AFP, the Philippine Army upholds the rule of law and respects human rights in everything they do. The organization will continue to follow the legal processes and is confident that the whole truth will surface, just as it did with the recent admission.#
