Date Released:  25 May 2010

NPA mastermind in Maragusan massacre arrested

Camp Felix Apolinario, Panacan, Davao City - The New People's Army (NPA) commander who masterminded the Maragusan massacre in Compostela Valley (ComVal) province was arrested by authorities in Sto. Tomas town in Davao del Norte 7:00 PM Saturday.

Renelo Creita alias Kumander Jaguar, 41 years old, was apprehended by the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group of the Philippine National Police together with troops from 66th Infantry Battalion who set-up a checkpoint after witnesses pointed to him as the leader of the bloody massacre in Maragusan town in ComVal last May 11.

It may be recalled that five individuals were killed while 12 soldiers and civilians were wounded as NPAs ambushed a group of Board of Election Inspectors, poll watchers and soldiers detailed for election duty.

A caliber .45 pistol together with an Improvised Explosive Device fashioned as landmine, a hand grenade and subversive documents were recovered in Creita's possession.

In an interview with GMA network Davao, Creita admitted to have planned the ambush, among other crimes which his group perpetrated from 2009 to 2010. He noted that he had forty followers when they staged the ambush. He also thanked authorities for not hurting him despite the heinous crime he committed. He declined to comment further saying his lawyer will answer the rest of the questions.

Kumander Jaguar also admitted to authorities that he and his armed followers were also responsible in several atrocities in ComVal including the killing of Saturnino Maglangit in Nabunturan on April 14 2009; the raid of 1107th Regional Mobile Group detailed to secure APEX mining Company in Mabini on May 28, 2009; and the burning of container vans owned by DOLE-Stanfilco in Brgy. Katipunan, Nabunturan last November 28, 2009 and August 29, 2010.

Last March 19, 2010, Kumander Jaguar and his followers also burned a Sadam truck owned by Maragusan Mayor Cesar Colina in the village of Parasonan in Maragusan. They were also the suspects in the attack of an Army patrol base in the village of Andili in Mawab still in ComVal last April 7, 2010.

Cases have been filed against Creita in court for violation of Sec. 1 (2) of PD 1866 as amended by RA 8294, Sec. 3 of PD 1866 as amended by Sec. 1 of RA 9516 and Sections 32 and 33 of RA 7166 in relation to COMELEC Resolution Nr. 8714.
