Another IED recovered by troops in Davao City

Camp Apolinario, Panacan, Davao City - Another Improvised Explosives Device (IED) was recovered by pursuing government troops who overrun an encampment following a clash with New People's Army (NPA) in the village of Sibulan in Toril District in Davao City 4:30 PM Wednesday.

Troops from the 5th Scout Ranger Company recovered the IED, assorted ammunitions and subversive documents in a 30-minute gunbattle with about 60 NPAs belonging to Local Terrorist Front-54. A temporary encampment of 10 huts was also overrun by the rangers. No casualty was reported on government troops while wounded or killed NPAs were seen being evacuated from the encounter site.

Maj. Gen. Carlos Holganza, commander of the Army's 10th Infantry Division with operational jurisdiction over Southern Mindanao expressed hope that more IEDs will be recovered in light of the NPAs palpable violation of International Humanitarian Law in using terrorist weapon. "Every IED recovered by our troops translates to a safer horizon for our people. We hope to get rid of these IEDs especially those planted by the terrorists along roads and bridges that endanger the life of every passerby." Holganza said.

The total IED recovered by soldiers in Southern Mindanao now stand at 30. Last week, a total of 11 IEDs were recovered by troops in just a period of three days.

In March, a truck driver of Sumifru banana plantation was hospitalized after NPA terrorists blew an IED in the village of Barakatan also in Toril District in Davao City.

In 2009, 11 IEDs were blown by NPAs in Southern Mindanao killing 11 individuals and injuring 30 others.
