Another IED recovered by troops in Davao City
Camp Apolinario, Panacan, Davao City - Another Improvised Explosives
Device (IED) was recovered by pursuing government troops who overrun an
encampment following a clash with New People's Army (NPA) in the village
of Sibulan in Toril District in Davao City 4:30 PM Wednesday.
Troops from the 5th Scout Ranger Company recovered the IED, assorted
ammunitions and subversive documents in a 30-minute gunbattle with about
60 NPAs belonging to Local Terrorist Front-54. A temporary encampment of
10 huts was also overrun by the rangers. No casualty was reported on
government troops while wounded or killed NPAs were seen being evacuated
from the encounter site.
Maj. Gen. Carlos Holganza, commander of the Army's 10th Infantry
Division with operational jurisdiction over Southern Mindanao expressed
hope that more IEDs will be recovered in light of the NPAs palpable
violation of International Humanitarian Law in using terrorist weapon.
"Every IED recovered by our troops translates to a safer horizon for our
people. We hope to get rid of these IEDs especially those planted by the
terrorists along roads and bridges that endanger the life of every
passerby." Holganza said.
The total IED recovered by soldiers in Southern Mindanao now stand at
30. Last week, a total of 11 IEDs were recovered by troops in just a
period of three days.
In March, a truck driver of Sumifru banana plantation was hospitalized
after NPA terrorists blew an IED in the village of Barakatan also in
Toril District in Davao City.
In 2009, 11 IEDs were blown by NPAs in Southern Mindanao killing 11
individuals and injuring 30 others.
