Professor Herman Joseph S. Kraft is the Convenor of the Strategic Studies Program of the University of the Philippines’ Center of Integrative and Development Studies (UP CIDS), which aims to aims to promote interest, discourse and significant changes in the Philippines foreign policy and capacity building for strategic studies. He also serves as Assistant Professor at the Department of Political Science at the University of the Philippines where he teaches courses in International Relations (particularly on International Security broadly defined) and Comparative Politics (including Democratization and Human Rights in Southeast Asia). He has been involved in unofficial and informal dialogue mechanisms on security in Southeast Asia and the broader Asia Pacific region since 1993.

He has worked on and published articles and book chapters on regional security and security issues involving the Philippines and Southeast Asia. His recent publications include: “Human Security in Southeast Asia: Changing Security Norms in ASEAN?” in Chantana Banpasirichote, Philippe Doneys, Mike Hayes, and Chandan Sengupta, eds. Mainstreaming Human Security: Asian Perspectives, Bangkok, Thailand: Chula Global Network, 2012, pp. 16-29; and “Driving East Asian Regionalism: the Reconstruction of ASEAN’s Identity,” in Ralf Emmers, ed. ASEAN and the Institutionalization of East Asia, Boulder: Routledge, 2012, pp. 61-74..  He earned his Master of Arts on Strategic Studies at the Australian National University (ANU) His field of Specialization include International Relations, International Peace and Security, and ASEAN studies.
