Army, U.S. Army Pacific strengthen cooperation

The Commanding General, Philippine Army (CGPA) Lt. Gen. Romeo S. Brawner, Jr., and Gen. Charles A. Flynn, Commanding General, United States Army Pacific (USARPAC), held bilateral talks aimed at sustaining activities of both armies during the 2022 Mutual Defense Board and Security Engagement Board (MDB-SEB) at Camp H. M. Smith, Hawaii on September 27, 2022.

Lt. Gen. Brawner is part of the Philippine delegation led by Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Bartolome Vicente Bacarro, Philippine National Police Chief Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr., and Philippine Coast Guard Admiral Artemio Manalo Abu. Meanwhile, Admiral John Aquilino, U.S. Indo-Pacific Command Chief, led the U.S. delegation in the 2022 convening of MDB-SEB which capped a years’ worth of bilateral planning between the two militaries.

The annual MDB-SEB ensures Philippine-U.S. cooperation in support of the Mutual Defense Treaty through exercises, training, and capability-building in countering terrorism and transnational crime, cyber security, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, and national security interest issues. The Philippine and U.S. militaries agreed to over 500 activities to be completed in 2023.

The MDB was established in 1958 while the SEB was established in 2006. The two boards form the framework which directs and enables defense and security cooperation between the U.S. and Philippine forces.
